In the Six-foot Lane, A Vast Realm Unfolds
六尺巷位于安徽桐城，是鄰里和諧禮讓之典范。
The Six-foot Lane is located in Tongcheng, Anhui Province, and is a model of harmonious and courteous neighborhood.
清朝康熙年間，文華殿大學(xué)士兼禮部尚書(shū)張英在桐城的家人，與鄰居吳家發(fā)生宅基糾紛。張家人給張英寫(xiě)信求助。不料，張英回信中寫(xiě)了一首打油詩(shī)：“一紙書(shū)來(lái)只為墻，讓他三尺又何妨。長(zhǎng)城萬(wàn)里今猶在，不見(jiàn)當(dāng)年秦始皇。”收到回信的張家人，心生愧意，主動(dòng)退讓三尺，吳家感動(dòng)也讓三尺，形成六尺巷。
During the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, the family of Zhang Ying, Grand Secretary of Wenhua Hall and Minister of Rites, had a dispute over the boundary of the homestead with the Wu family, their neighbor in Tongcheng. The Zhang family wrote to Zhang Ying for help. Unexpectedly, Zhang Ying wrote a doggerel in his reply: “A letter comes just for a wall; Why not yield three feet and all? The Great Wall still stands today; But Qin Shi Huang has gone away.” After receiving the reply, the Zhang family felt ashamed and took the initiative to retreat three feet. Touched by this, the Wu family also conceded three feet, thus forming the Six-foot Lane.
六尺巷蘊(yùn)含“以禮為先、以讓為賢、以和為貴”理念，體現(xiàn)中華民族傳統(tǒng)美德，影響深遠(yuǎn)。歷史上六尺巷曾被毀，后復(fù)建擴(kuò)建?！傲呦铩迸c“桐城派”共同成為了桐城文化最耀眼的名片。
The Six-foot Lane contains the concepts of "giving priority to courtesy, respecting concession as virtue, and valuing harmony", reflecting the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation and having a profound influence. In history, the Six-foot Lane was once destroyed and later reconstructed and expanded. "Six-foot Lane" and "Tongcheng School" have jointly become the most dazzling name cards of Tongcheng culture.
鑒古爍今，在社會(huì)治理方面，桐城市人民法院推出“六尺巷調(diào)解法”成效顯著，獲評(píng)全國(guó)先進(jìn)典型，為基層治理提供借鑒。在文化傳承方面，六尺巷的故事深入人心，對(duì)傳承弘揚(yáng)優(yōu)秀傳統(tǒng)文化、加強(qiáng)精神文明建設(shè)意義重大。
Looking at the past and illuminating the present, in terms of social governance, the People's Court of Tongcheng City has launched the "Six-foot Lane Mediation Method" with remarkable results. It has been rated as a national advanced model and provides a reference for primary-level governance. In terms of cultural inheritance, the story of the Six-foot Lane is deeply rooted in people's hearts and is of great significance for inheriting and promoting excellent traditional culture and strengthening the construction of spiritual civilization.
2024 年 10 月 17 日，習(xí)近平總書(shū)記來(lái)到桐城市六尺巷，重溫張吳禮讓典故，察看桐城歷史文化展陳?？倳?shū)記強(qiáng)調(diào)，六尺巷承載歷史智慧，要弘揚(yáng)中華民族傳統(tǒng)美德，相互禮讓、以和為貴，解決好民生問(wèn)題，化解好社會(huì)矛盾，使社會(huì)更加和諧。這進(jìn)一步提升了六尺巷的知名度和影響力，為其傳承和發(fā)展注入了新動(dòng)力。
On October 17, 2024, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to the Six-foot Lane in Tongcheng City, reviewed the story of courtesy between the Zhang and Wu families, and inspected the exhibition of Tongcheng's history and culture. The General Secretary emphasized that the Six-foot Lane carries historical wisdom. We should carry forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation, be courteous to each other, value harmony, solve people's livelihood issues well, resolve social contradictions well, and make society more harmonious. This further enhances the popularity and influence of the Six-foot Lane and injects new impetus into its inheritance and development.
